Rescued PC from a trash bin functioning again - Linux and light games can still be played on the salvaged system
In an unusual turn of events, a Redditor named u/AcordeonPhx has breathed new life into an old gaming PLC, turning it into a robust platform for industrial and embedded applications. The upgraded PLC, now equipped with an AMD Radeon R9 380 GPU and Windows 11 IoT Enterprise, is poised to excel in tasks requiring moderate graphics performance, real-time visualization, and multimedia processing.
The AMD Radeon R9 380, released several years ago as a mid-range graphics card, offers decent graphics and video processing power. Although no longer considered high-end for modern gaming or compute-intensive work, it aligns perfectly with the needs of industrial automation control panels, digital kiosks or signage systems, and embedded systems demanding hardware-accelerated video decoding/encoding or image processing.
The PLC's upgrade didn't stop at the GPU. It also received additional hardware, a new SSD for storage, 16GB of RAM, a replacement CPU fan, and a new power supply (Seasonic SS-520GB 520W). The PLC's motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-H100M-A. After a thorough cleaning and repasting, the PLC was updated with the latest BIOS and drivers, and the operating system was switched to Windows 11 IoT Enterprise, designed for embedded systems and IoT devices.
The PLC's former owner likely discarded it due to an upgrade, but its capabilities suggest it may have been used for rendering user interfaces, signs, or light 3D work. Now, the upgraded PLC can potentially serve as a Linux gaming machine for another 10 years, handling some older titles and casual gaming.
The PLC's new owner, u/AcordeonPhx, rescued the device from becoming e-waste. The PLC now boots up to Windows 11 IoT Enterprise, installed in July of last year. With its powerful combination of hardware and operating system, this old gaming PLC has been transformed into a versatile tool suitable for a wide range of industrial and embedded applications.
