Rivian, the American electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced that its upgraded Powered Tonneau Cover is now available for a select group of R1T owners. This development comes after a brief hiatus due to reliability issues with the original cover.

The Powered Tonneau Cover, initially offered but later discontinued due to technical problems, seems to be making a comeback. Owners on the Rivianforums.com community have started reporting their vehicles' compatibility with the upgraded cover, suggesting that it might be based on the VIN number.

Rivian encourages owners to contact them to check eligibility for the upgraded Powered Tonneau Cover. The best place to do this is through the company's Gear Shop, where owners can also set up an appointment for installation.

Not every R1T vehicle is compatible with the upgraded Powered Tonneau Cover due to wire harness limitations. Vehicles with VIN numbers between ~14k and ~19k have been told they are not compatible, while some early owners with VINs of ~13k and under, and owners with VINs above ~21k have been told they are compatible.

The installation of the Powered Tonneau Cover for eligible vehicles costs $3,300, which includes both parts and installation at a Rivian service center. This price is a significant increase from the initial $2,000 price tag when the cover was offered as an option in Rivian's configurator, but it now comes standard on R1T Tri and Quad configurations.

The new Powered Tonneau Cover option costs $3,300 and is available as a retrofit for certain R1T vehicles. It's worth noting that third-party options for Powered Tonneau Covers are manual and do not have the benefit of being able to open and close with a touch of a button, a feature that Rivian's cover boasts.

One of the key improvements in the new Powered Tonneau Cover is its "virtually noise-free" operation, a significant upgrade over the noisy original cover that owners reported.

Rivian stopped installing covers, offered fixes/replacements for those affected by reliability problems, and promised a return of the feature in the future. The Powered Tonneau Cover was initially announced to become available again in early 2024, but it is now available in late 2025.
