Current ethical guidelines and regulations focus more on principles of accountability, transparency, safety, and human rights, influenced by but not limited to fictional models. These include efforts in algorithmic accountability, AI alignment research, and normative frameworks developed by governments and organizations to manage AI risks and ensure ethical use.

Academic and practical research on AI ethics acknowledges the spirit of the Three Laws—prioritizing human safety and control—while emphasizing that rigid rules are insufficient without external laws, regulations, and normative enforcement.

As the use of autonomous weapons raises ethical concerns, discussions about AI-controlled weapons refusing harmful orders and prioritizing human lives over military objectives continue. Asimov later introduced the Zeroth Law, which takes precedence over the other laws and states that a robot must not harm humanity or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.
