Rocket-Firing Boba Fett Vintage Toy Sets New Record for Highest Value Yet Once More

Here's a revised, restructured, and reworded version of the article:

Breaking Records: The Most Valuable Vintage Toy Ever Sold

Just a couple of months ago, the world was left astounded as the rarest and most famous Star Wars toy ever crafted, Kenner's prototype for Boba Fett's rocket-firing action figure, became the most expensive vintage toy ever auctioned, fetching an astonishing $525,000. Yet, history repeated itself last night, as the same iconic figure broke its own record, tripling its value.

The latest record shatterer? An extremely rare variant of the prototype, sold by Goldin Auctions at a public auction for a staggering $1.342 million dollars. Known as the "J-slot" iteration, this version showcases an even more limited design of the rocket-firing mechanism on Boba Fett's backpack, which never made it to retail shelves.

With approximately 100 prototypes of the rocket-firing Boba Fett still in circulation after plans for its release as a free mail-away bonus in 1979 were abandoned, concerns about its safety arose when Mattel's rocket-firing Battlestar Galactica toy led to a child's death, prompting worries over the choking hazard posed by Boba's included rocket. Despite this, the figure did see release in 1980, albeit with the rocket-firing feature glued shut and a warning about the safety concerns.

Out of the surviving prototypes, it's estimated that roughly 70 contained the initial "L-slot" version of the firing mechanism, while around 30 featured the "J-slot," a later prototype designed to reduce misfires. The $525,000 Boba Fett sold at Heritage Auctions in June was an "L-slot" prototype, but the one sold by Goldin was the rarer and more prized "J-slot." Unique to this particular "J-slot" Boba Fett, it was hand-painted as a prototype for sample mailer packaging, complete with the rockets and Boba's blaster rifle. Only three known examples of this specific prototype are believed to exist, making this sold item the only one ever publicly auctioned.

The future of discovering even rarer samples of the rocket-firing Boba Fett remains uncertain. However, the new record holder now boasts an undeniably prestigious bounty in their collection.

Enrichment Insights:When determining the most valuable vintage toy, factors like rarity, cultural significance, and demand play a crucial role. Some of the most valuable collectibles include rare LEGO sets, like the San Diego Comic-Con 2013 Spider-Man set, which can sell for tens of thousands of dollars. Funko Pops, such as the Willy Wonka 'Golden Ticker' 2 Pack, have also set record-breaking prices, with sales reaching up to $100,000. In rarer cases, items like the Coral Casino Beanie Baby can fetch around $2,950. Breaking previous records often involves a combination of factors, such as the item's rarity, cultural significance, and market demand, as demonstrated by the record-breaking sale of a different Funko Pop in 2022 for $60,000.
