RWE Explores Expanding Laser Fusion Collaboration, Eyes Biblis Site
RWE, a prominent German energy company, has expressed interest in expanding its collaboration with Focused Energy, a promising startup specializing in laser fusion. The company has already invested 10 million euros in the Darmstadt-based startup during the first phase of their cooperation.
RWE's initial engagement with Focused Energy began in the summer of 2024, focusing on Laser Driven Radiation Sources (LDRS). The startup, founded in 2021 by a team from TU Darmstadt, is led by an unnamed individual who has been supported by RWE in laser fusion technology. The company is also backed by the state, including the Federal Agency for Sprunginnovationen (SPRIND).
RWE is considering the decommissioned nuclear power plant site in Biblis as a potential hub for fusion energy. The site's existing infrastructure makes it an attractive option for developing a significant laser fusion campus in Germany. RWE's support for the investment aligns with the federal government's promoted fusion research. Laser fusion power plants could potentially generate significantly more energy than the laser consumes by heating and compressing tiny fuel capsules.
RWE's openness to further engagements with Focused Energy indicates the company's commitment to supporting innovative laser fusion technology. The potential development of the Biblis site into a major laser fusion campus could significantly advance Germany's fusion energy capabilities.
