Samsung Update Malfunctioning: Trouble for Millions of Galaxy Device Users
Samsung Galaxy updates are making headlines yet again, despite the supposed smoothing over of issues with the delayed release of its One UI 7 beta. Over the past 24 hours, numerous headlines have surfaced, highlighting a new phone-damaging issue with a potentially pricey consequence. This issue may impact your device if the One UI 6.1 update fails to install properly.
In the current climate of mobile device security concerns and attacks, users tend to update as soon as possible, fearing attacks or missed features. However, not all updates are created equal. As one Galaxy S22 user noted on the company's official user forum, "The boot loop issue after the One UI 6.1 update is clearly widespread, and I want to see just how widespread this problem is." The problem appears to be widespread indeed.
According to SamMobile, "While the One UI 6.1 update brought several Galaxy AI features to the Galaxy S22, it also brought some serious problems... After installing a One UI 6.1-based update released in September 2022, several Galaxy S22 users claim that their phone is either stuttering or facing bootloop issues."
Users reported mixed results when seeking assistance at Samsung service centers. Samsung has dealt with similar issues in the past, pulling the update and re-releasing it after solving the issues.
Phone Arena reported that "some Galaxy S22 series users state that their phone restarts and goes through this cycle several times a day while others say that their phone is randomly freezing and crashing. Regardless of which issue is making your Galaxy S22 model unusable, it is, well, making your Galaxy S22 model unusable. And this isn't something that came out of nowhere. Earlier this year when Samsung released One UI 6.1 for the Galaxy S22 line, similar problems started to surface, forcing Sammy to pull the update and re-release it a few weeks later."
The prevailing theory is that this issue affects devices utilizing the company's Exynos 2200 chipset and not the Snapdragon chipsets powering S22 Ultra devices or those sold in the U.S.
Android Police reported that, given the number of reports, the issue seems to be affecting a significant portion of Galaxy users. "In cases where the update did not brick the phone, users complain of random reboots and overheating issues."
The bad news for millions of S22 owners is that this issue may resemble a ticking time bomb on your phone. Unfortunately, the delay in getting One UI 6.1 to your S22 has likely passed your warranty's expiration date, which means you may bear the cost of repair.
And as SamMobile suggests, "If so many Galaxy S22 series users are facing bootloop or stuttering issues, and if the software update is the root cause of that issue, Samsung should issue a statement about it. It should also ask its authorized service centers worldwide to replace the motherboards of affected units for free."
However, as of now, Samsung hasn't issued a statement or asked service centers to replace affected motherboards for free. If you own a Galaxy S22 and have installed the One UI 6.1.1/September 2024 update, your options are limited, as updates have not resolved the random reboot and crashing issues.
- Despite the ongoing issues with the One UI 7 beta, users are still eager to update their Samsung devices, fearing security vulnerabilities or missing out on new features.
- The recent One UI 6.1 update for the Samsung S22 series brought several AI features but also introduced bootloop issues for some users, as reported on SamMobile.
- In light of the current bootloop problem affecting several Galaxy S22 users, Samsung vs Pixel or Samsung vs iPhone discussions on mobile operating systems might shift towards discussing reliability and update management.
- With Android 15 upgrade on the horizon, Samsung users hoping for an issue-free experience may reconsider their updates, citing the Samsung galaxy warning and the persistent issues with the company's software updates, as seen with the One UI 6.1 for the S22 series.
