Samsung's Galaxy Watch Ultimately Obtains Comprehensive Peloton Integration

Samsung and Peloton have announced that connectivity is now possible between Samsung's smartwatches and Peloton's exercise equipment. The Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 series can now be synced with Peloton's Bike, Tread, Row, and Guide.

The Peloton app has been accessible on Samsung's Wear OS-based watches since October 2022. This latest update enables users to monitor and record their heart rate on the watch during a workout with any Peloton device. Previously, this feature was limited to the Apple Watch and other compatible heart rate monitors. For Galaxy Watch users, heart rate tracking was only available during classes taken on the Peloton mobile app on Android.

To use this feature, select a workout on your Peloton machine. Then, open the Peloton app on your Galaxy Watch and wait for the prompt to pair your devices. You'll see a pop-up instructing you to connect, which will then display real-time heart rate monitoring on your watch. Once you complete the workout, your results will be logged along with the class you took on your Peloton machine.

I'm a big fan of the Android ecosystem, and I'm thrilled to finally see an Apple Watch-like feature available on the Galaxy Watch. Although my purchase of the Peloton Bike+ was rarely utilized due to intimidation, this announcement has given me new motivation. Perhaps now, I can persuade myself to use the bike in my living room more often.

Unfortunately, the Google-made Pixel Watch was not mentioned in this announcement. Despite being the flagship wearable of the Android ecosystem, some diehards feel that it falls short compared to other models. Recently, the Pixel Watch has been selling well, even though it's missing certain features like a temperature sensor.

Updated 4/5/2023 1:00 P.M.: Despite being initially omitted from the announcement, it was later confirmed that Pixel Watch users can also use the Peloton app to track heart rate during a workout. I recently tested this feature with my Peloton Bike+ and discovered that it wasn't just compatible with Samsung watches. Although the Pixel Watch isn't officially included in the announcement, it's reassuring to know that Peloton's development work wasn't exclusive. I was able to sync my Galaxy Watch 4 and Pixel Watch to the same bike. However, I encountered some difficulties trying to control the connectivity from my Peloton equipment's settings panel. The only connected device I could see was my wireless earbuds.

We reached out to Peloton for more information, and they confirmed that there's full integration across all Wear OS 3 watches. "We've built a service that can send and receive workout metrics in real time between our app running on different Peloton products," explained Peloton in an email. "This allows our members to use their Wear OS watches while working out to display their heart rate metrics in real time."

The integration of technology between Samsung and Peloton opens up exciting possibilities for the future of fitness. With this new feature, Pixel Watch users can also track their heart rate during a workout with Peloton devices, expanding the platform's compatibility.
