Senator's Bitcoin Mining Firm Faces Lawsuits Amidst US Industry Boom
Kentucky Senator Brandon Smith's Bitcoin mining company, Mohawk Energy, faces two lawsuits. Meanwhile, the US cryptocurrency mining industry, including Bitcoin, continues to grow.
Smith denies all allegations and has filed counterclaims against both plaintiffs. The lawsuits allege misrepresentation and breach of contract.
Ricky Dale Cole sued Smith in January 2023, claiming misrepresentation and lack of profit from a business deal. In November 2023, HBTPower, a subsidiary of Huobi, followed suit, alleging breach of contract and misrepresentation after being evicted from their premises. Notably, there's no public record of a cooperation agreement between Smith and HBTPower.
Mohawk Energy, which pivoted from coal cleanup operations to ASIC repair and other Bitcoin mining services in 2022, is at the center of these disputes. Despite the lawsuits, Smith remains optimistic about the cryptocurrency mining industry's future in the US and Kentucky.
The US cryptocurrency mining sector has expanded significantly, with a 23% growth between 2022 and 2024. Bitcoin mining sites have increased to 48, reflecting the industry's professionalization, despite variability among companies.
