Sony Enters Crypto Market, Acquires Amber Japan, Launches S.BLOX

Sony is making waves in the crypto world. The tech giant has acquired crypto exchange Amber Japan, set to relaunch it as S.BLOX, marking its official entry into the crypto business. This move comes after years of Sony exploring the crypto market, including filing a patent for NFT use in gaming in 2022.

Sony's subsidiary Quetta Web had already snapped up Amber Japan in August 2023. The acquired exchange, licensed by the Japanese financial regulator, had faced challenges post the FTX collapse, including layoffs and halted international expansion. Now, Sony plans to redesign Amber's WhaleFin app under the S.BLOX brand. Jun Watanabe, the designated Director of S.BLOX, is eager to explore new business areas through this partnership with Sony.

Sony's interest in blockchain isn't new. It has been working with Startale Labs since last year on its own public blockchain platform. With the acquisition of Amber Japan, Sony aims to integrate S.BLOX into various sectors of its business to create synergies.
