Sony Potentially Purchasing FromSoftware's Parent Company: A Frustrating Step towards Producing a Bloodborne Remaster
Sony, the renowned Japanese electronics and entertainment company, is reportedly considering a deal to acquire Kadokawa, a significant media conglomerate in Japan.
This potential acquisition could mark a significant shift in the industry, as Kadokawa owns major franchises such as Delicious in Dungeon and the Netflix series based on it. Kadokawa also holds a 70% stake in FromSoftware, the studio behind acclaimed games like Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and the recent smash hit Elden Ring, a collaboration between Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin.
The news comes after Sony's latest attempts to force PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts on PC-based games have met with mixed responses. In contrast, Sony's emphasis on content for Windows PCs, as mentioned by Yoshida, the Sony boss, in January, has been well-received.
The market value of Kadokawa soared above $3.6 billion on Tuesday, suggesting that the market is anticipating a significant deal. However, Reuters did not offer any insight into what Sony is willing to pay for Kadokawa.
Anonymous sources have confirmed that the talks between the two companies are ongoing. This potential deal, if successful, could potentially set up FromSoftware as a PlayStation-first enterprise.
However, the negotiations come amidst concerns over cybersecurity. Hackers have released sensitive information to the dark web in June and September of this year, with Kadokawa being a victim of a ransomware attack earlier in the year. Hackers have reportedly demanded money and threatened to release 1.5 terabytes of data from Kadokawa.
As of Update 11/20/24 at 12:01 p.m. ET, it has been confirmed that Kadokawa has received an offer from Sony. The future developments in this story are eagerly awaited by the gaming and media industries.
