Space, the Final (But Deadly) Frontier
Ah, the allure of piracy - ordinarily found in the murky depths of the ocean, now rising to the cold, unknown reaches of space! That's the essence of Wildgate, the new space piracy game created by Mike Morhaime, former CEO of Blizzard and current mastermind at Dreamhaven. The exciting announcement was made during this year's Summer Game Fest, setting a launch date for this Sea of Thieves-equivalent in space: July 22.
In Wildgate, you and your perpetual pirate crew will engage in a less-than-friendly race against other spacefaring ne'er-do-wells. The target? The Artifact, a valuable relic that has attracted some of the galaxy's most dangerous miscreants. This leak-filled galaxy is a deadly place, full of cosmic hazards that'll test your survival skills.
To tackle your rivals, you can outfit your spaceship with a variety of vessels, each offering varying levels of armor, maneuverability, and shielding. But don't forget the most important thing - powerful spaceship guns! You'll need them to blast your opponents (and their precious relic) out of space. If you're feeling extra adventurous, you can abandon the guns altogether and venture onto enemy ships, wrecking havoc from within. It's all about the chaos.
Of course, if the treacherous relic hunt isn't enough, there are other cosmic treasures to discover, such as even bigger and better guns for your vessel. The business of piracy isn't for the faint-hearted.
Before the game's official release, Dreamhaven has generously invited gamers to test Wildgate well ahead of time. Starting on June 6, 2025 (during Steam Next Fest), an open beta will be available for anyone interested. To participate, simply head to the Wildgate Steam page. The open beta will run until June 16, 2025.
