Stolen Range Rover Traced to Karachi, Highlighting Global Car Theft Gangs

A Range Rover stolen from Harrogate last November has been traced to Karachi, Pakistan, highlighting the international reach of car theft gangs. The luxury SUV was one of many high-end vehicles targeted in the UK, with Range Rover Sports topping the list of most stolen vehicles in 2022 and 2023.

Gangs are using sophisticated technology to bypass keyless entry systems, making it easier to steal luxury cars. Once taken, the vehicles are smuggled out of the country, often disassembled and sold in parts abroad. The demand for foreign luxury SUVs, like the Range Rover, has surged in Pakistan, with many buyers unaware they're purchasing stolen goods.

Interpol has been assisting in tracking these vehicles, with a recent case involving a Bentley stolen in London and found in Pakistan. The Range Rover from Harrogate was discovered after a 5,000-mile journey, its chassis number altered and local plates fitted. Jaguar Land Rover, the manufacturer of Range Rover, has faced significant challenges with thefts, including a cyberattack in 2024.

The international nature of car theft is evident, with stolen vehicles from the UK ending up thousands of miles away. Authorities are working together to combat this issue, but the demand for foreign luxury SUVs in countries like Pakistan continues to fuel the problem. Consumers are urged to be cautious when purchasing high-end vehicles and to verify their provenance.
