Strategies for Data Managers Amidst the Global Crisis
In an article published by the GCN Insider, Robert Audet and Vasil Jaiani, leaders of the GCN Insider's website, have outlined five actions for public sector Chief Data Officers (CDOs) and data leaders to maximize the usefulness of data for information-driven decision-making during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The first action is to build sovereign digital and data competencies among public staff. This will enable effective data handling and digital infrastructure use, ensuring that the public sector is well-equipped to manage and analyse data in a crisis.
The second action is to implement open data initiatives and leverage existing public data sources for predictive analytics. For example, using AI to analyse wastewater data could serve as a health early warning system, helping to predict and respond to outbreaks more effectively.
The third action is to develop and enforce a regulatory framework that supports digital transformation while ensuring practical capabilities for implementation. This will help to ensure that the public sector is able to make the most of new technologies and data tools, while also maintaining a level of control and accountability.
The fourth action is to prioritise holistic performance improvement by using data-driven analyses to identify and focus on key process and strategic transformations. This will help to ensure that resources are allocated effectively and that the public sector is able to make informed decisions about where to focus its efforts.
The final action is to integrate modern technologies and data tools to accelerate efficiency and improve crisis response measures such as health interventions, resource planning, and logistics management. This will help to ensure that the public sector is able to respond quickly and effectively to crises, using data to make informed decisions about how to allocate resources and manage operations.
These actions are designed specifically for public sector CDOs and data leaders, and are aimed at improving decision-making processes during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. By following these guidelines, the public sector can make the most of the data at its disposal and make informed decisions that will benefit the community as a whole.
