Stripe and OpenAI Revolutionize Shopping with AI-Powered Transactions
Stripe and OpenAI have joined forces to revolutionise shopping experiences, enabling transactions through AI agents like ChatGPT. The collaboration introduces the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open standard that ensures secure and seamless payments.
Stripe has developed the Shared Payment Token (SPT) for transactions, allowing applications like ChatGPT to initiate payments without exposing sensitive buyer data. Businesses can now make their products, prices, and checkout processes available to AI agents without compromising security.
OpenAI has been leveraging Stripe's services for ChatGPT Plus subscriptions and fraud detection since 2023. The new initiative, powered by ACP, aims to create AI-powered shopping experiences for billions of people. Users can now buy items directly from Etsy sellers, and soon Shopify merchants, within ChatGPT through 'Instant Checkout in ChatGPT'. When a user asks for product recommendations, a checkout window appears directly in the chat. Orders from ChatGPT will flow into the merchant's backend using ACP, maintaining the current order management and payment processing systems.
Stripe and OpenAI are paving the way for transactions through AI agents to become the norm. By expanding access to more businesses and consumers in additional markets over time, they aim to transform the way we shop and interact with products and services.
