Sweden provides over half a billion dollars in support to bolster Ukraine's military capacities
Sweden Bolsters Ukraine's Defense With SEK 4.8 Billion
Stockholm, Sweden - Sweden has dedicated SEK 4.8 billion ($504 million) to Ukraine's defense capabilities as part of its 19th aid package this year. The Swedish government announced this initiative on May 22, with the aim to strengthen Ukraine's defenses against Russia.
The funds will be directed to various multilateral funds and initiatives, including:
- Demining Capability Coalition: SEK 100 million ($10.5 million) will be used for purchasing demining equipment.
- Drone Coalition: Sweden will contribute SEK 300 million ($31.5 million) to enable the purchase of different types of drones.
- Maritime Capability Coalition: The Swedish government has pledged SEK 50 million ($5.2 million) for training Ukrainian navy personnel as part of Operation Intercharge.
- IT Coalition: SEK 30 million ($3.1 million) have been set aside for procuring equipment to establish the Ukrainian Delta management system.
In addition, Sweden has agreed to contribute further to the Danish model of arms procurement, with an additional SEK 1 billion ($105 million). Altogether, the funds allocated for various initiatives aim to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities.
The government has also earmarked SEK 418 million ($43.9 million) for purchasing armored vehicle equipment and allocated more than SEK 1 billion for air defense systems and long-range drones. The funding for these acquisitions is not specified in the allocation for the multilateral funds and initiatives.
In March, Sweden announced €2 million to support opportunities for women in Ukraine and later allocated about US$137 million for recovery and development. This funding appears to be separate from the latest aid package aimed at strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities.
The Swedish Ministry of Defense emphasized that this support is crucial to ensuring the stronger defense forces of Ukraine against Russia. The international community has established several multilateral funds and initiatives to procure materials and equipment to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities, and Stockholm contributes to several of them.
The Swedish government, stressing the importance of Ukraine's defense against Russia, has allocated SEK 4.8 billion towards various multilateral funds and initiatives, including the IT Coalition, where SEK 30 million will be used for procuring technology to establish the Ukrainian Delta management system. Moreover, the government has earmarked funds for improving Ukraine's health and safety, such as SEK 100 million for purchasing demining equipment to enhance the health and wellbeing of Ukrainian citizens.
