Swedes experience massive data leak, exposing sensitive information of approximately 1.5 million individuals.
In a series of cyber attacks, several private companies and public institutions in Sweden have had their data compromised. Among the affected companies are truckmaker Volvo, airline SAS, plane engine maker GKN Aerospace, and systems provider Miljodata.
The attack, which occurred during the weekend of August 23rd-24th, also affected municipal councils, regional authorities, and private companies across the country. According to reports, at least 164 municipalities and four regional authorities were affected, with more than 1.5 million private individuals' data involved in the breach. This represents nearly 15% of Sweden's 10.6 million population.
The Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection received 250 reports from affected parties in late August. Public broadcaster SVT reported that employees, especially in the city of Gothenburg, were affected by the hack.
The type of data leaked included names, addresses, personal numbers, and contact details. Swedish media reported that the hackers demanded 1.5 bitcoin (roughly $170,000 or almost 1.1 million kronor) when threatening to release the data.
Datacarry has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the individuals behind the data ransom demand related to the attack on Miljodata have not been publicly identified. No evidence suggests the involvement of a foreign power in the attack.
An investigation into the data breach is ongoing, with the focus on identifying the individual or individuals responsible for the attack. Miljodata confirmed that the data had been published on the dark web. The company is working closely with authorities to mitigate the impact of the breach and protect the affected individuals.
As the investigation continues, affected parties are advised to monitor their personal data closely and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. It is a reminder for everyone to prioritise cybersecurity and take necessary precautions to protect their personal information.
