SAP Launches Sovereign Cloud in India, Bolstering Data Security and Compliance

In a significant move, SAP, the global enterprise software giant, has launched its Sovereign Cloud in India. The new cloud service is designed to empower India's regulated industries to innovate fearlessly, ensuring data security and compliance.

Manish Prasad, the president and managing director of SAP Indian Subcontinent, highlighted the importance of the Sovereign Cloud, stating that it will provide customers with four dimensions of control - data, operational, technical, and legal. He also mentioned that the cloud offering is aligned with India's National Information Security Policy and Guidelines (NISPG).

The Sovereign Cloud allows customers to choose from deployment models including on-site data centres or a hyper-scaler-based option with Amazon Web Services (AWS). SAP's commitment to India is evident in the significant portion of the €20 billion investment in its Sovereign Cloud portfolio that will flow into the country.

Dedicated teams of Indian nationals, based in Bengaluru and Gurugram, will lead the sovereign cloud initiatives. They will oversee the operation of a Secure Operational Facility, inaugurated at SAP Labs India Innovation Park in Bengaluru. This facility is designed to meet stringent government security requirements and serve as a hub for co-creating sovereign digital solutions.

Martin Merz, president of SAP Sovereign Cloud, emphasised that digital sovereignty supports public sector and regulated industry customers in creating a secure, resilient, and future-ready foundation for growth. Abhishek Singh, additional secretary of the ministry of electronics and information technology, also expressed support for India's partnership with industry players like SAP in building trusted products.

Prasad explained that SAP waited before coming to India to ensure the framework was aligned with government requirements. He also emphasised that sectors such as defence and aerospace demand the highest levels of compliance and security.

It's worth noting that while SAP has made significant strides in India, other tech news has emerged. For instance, Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, has asked xAI staff to justify their work within 48 hours.

Despite the global nature of SAP's Sovereign Cloud initiative, the leader of the Sovereign Cloud initiatives is based in Germany. Christine Knackfuß-Nikolic, who took on the role of Chief Sovereignty Officer as of September 1, 2025, is associated with T-Systems, a German company. However, her role does not necessarily imply a physical presence in India.

In conclusion, SAP's Sovereign Cloud launch marks a significant step forward in ensuring data security and compliance for India's regulated industries. The investment in India and the dedication of local teams underscores SAP's commitment to the Indian market.
