Telecom giant MTN Ghana generates GHC 3.6 billion revenue within the initial six months of 2025
MTN Ghana Reports Staggering 56% Profit Surge in First Half of 2025
In a remarkable turn of events, MTN Ghana, the largest mobile operator in Ghana, has reported a 55.8% surge in profit after tax, reaching an impressive 3.6 billion Ghanaian cedis (~$2.3 billion) for the first half of 2025. This significant growth is primarily driven by strong growth in data revenue, mobile money services, and voice revenue.
The unaudited half-year financial results, released last Wednesday, show that data revenue increased by 50.8% to GH₵6.0 billion due to higher active data users, which rose by 11% to 18.2 million. The number of active mobile money users (MoMo) also saw a 7.4% increase, reaching 17.7 million, resulting in a 46.4% rise in mobile money revenue to GH₵2.8 billion. Voice revenue grew 12.6% to GH₵2.0 billion.
Overall, service revenue for MTN Ghana soared 40% to GH₵11.3 billion. The company's subscriber base also expanded by 6.5% to 30.2 million.
The CEO of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, attributed the stellar performance to "strong commercial momentum and execution." He also praised the dedication of MTN Ghana's workforce, stating that the results would not be possible without their unwavering dedication and hard work.
The improving economic conditions in Ghana, with inflation dropping to 13.7% in June and the cedi strengthening against the U.S. dollar, may have contributed to MTN Ghana's success.
The announcement of the results fueled a rally in the company's stock, hitting an all-time high of 3.55 cedis ($2.25) on the Ghana Stock Exchange.
MTN Ghana declared an interim dividend of 0.08 cedis per share, up from 0.065 cedis in the same period last year. The company maintains its strategic focus on its "Ambition 2025" growth plan, aiming to continue this impressive growth trajectory.
In summary, the key factors contributing to MTN Ghana’s profit surge are accelerated revenue growth in data services and mobile money, subscriber growth, and improved overall service revenue.
The substantial increase in data revenue, driven by higher active data users and a rise in the number of active mobile money users, is a significant factor in MTN Ghana's 56% profit surge in the first half of 2025. This growth can be attributed to the strong commercial momentum and execution in the technology and business sectors, as well as the improving economic conditions in Ghana.
