Tesla Makes its Debut in India, Highlighting 5 Technologies that Distinguish it from its Competitors
In a significant stride for electric vehicles (EVs) in India, Tesla has launched the Model Y at the Tesla Experience Centre, located in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex. This marks Tesla's first physical presence in the country.
The Model Y, renowned for its impressive technology under the hood, offers a host of features designed to enhance the driving experience. The dashboard is dominated by a large 15.4-inch touchscreen, providing easy access to various functions. The vehicle also boasts wireless charging, USB-C ports, voice command support, internet connectivity, and app-based access.
In India, the Model Y is available in two variants: the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive. The base RWD variant, priced at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom), offers a WLTP range of 500 km with a top speed of 201 km/h. The Long Range RWD variant, priced at Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom), offers a longer range of 622 km and a slightly faster acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds compared to the base model's 5.9 seconds.
Tesla's self-driving system, a standout feature, utilizes artificial intelligence and deep learning, using neural networks to detect roads, signs, pedestrians, and other vehicles. The Model Y's autonomy algorithms combine sensor and camera data to understand surroundings and alert the vehicle to upcoming hurdles.
Tesla's engineers write high-performance code that runs directly on custom-built hardware, handling everything from car startup to sensor communication and driving data processing. The company even designs its own chips for self-driving features, built for speed, power-efficiency, and reliability.
Deliveries for the Model Y are set for the third quarter of 2025. Additional features and options, such as different colours and full self-driving capability, are available at extra costs.
