The Dyson WashG1 Emerges as an Invaluable Holiday Aid

The final two weeks of 2025 are packed with enjoyable activities. From Christmas and Hanukkah to Kwanzaa and New Year's, you might find more people in your home in the next few days than any other time this year.

I hosted a Christmas dinner and it served as a reminder that I'm not a spotless and organized host. Eggnog was spilled, my footprints were evident as I moved around the house carrying a ham-filled dish, mud was tracked in from various sources.

Fortunately, I had a secret asset in my cleaning arsenal that turned these minor mishaps into brief inconveniences. The Dyson VacWashG1 is a powered mop that eliminates the necessity of vacuuming before you clean your floor.

What Is It?

Reimagined Dyson Vacuum Design: Clean Render Concepts

Amazingly straightforward to use, the VacWashG1 is an upright powered mop that utilizes a pair of counter-rotating mop rollers. These rollers clean themselves while removing spills and hard debris from your floor in a single sweep. Surprisingly, for a company known for its vacuum suction, the VacWashG1 relies on the agitation of the rollers instead of suction to clean your floors.

The 64,000 filament microfiber mops are self-cleaning as they run. Debris and dirty water are sluiced off, ensuring the mop always maintains contact with the floor. The company tested numerous real spills (far beyond the industry standard of dried mustard, tartar sauce, and coffee) on a black floor using UV light to ensure the VacWashG1 passed all tests.

The best part of using the Vac Wash GI is that you don't have to clean your floor before you clean your floor. Hard debris (like the nut shells scattered all over your kitchen floor by that one uncle who thinks nutcrackers are functional rather than decorative) is captured in a pull-out tray located between the two rollers. At the end of a cleaning session, all you have to do is pull out the tray and discard the debris captured by the filter. Meanwhile, dirty water is separated out. Just unclip the central water module, unscrew the dirty water reservoir, and discard it.

The VacWashG1 uses a small motor to create negative pressure to siphon dirty water up from the tray. The smaller motor translates to a long run time on a single charge. The water tanks are prominent and easily visible when operating, so you don't have to guess if you need more clean water or to empty the dirty water.

How Well Does It Work?

The VacWashG1 feels awkward to hold at first, but once you start the mop rollers, it easily glides across the floor, mopping up the water it applies. The amount of water is adjustable via a handy button and the full-color LCD screen keeps you informed on what the machine is doing or needs.

The head swivels easily into almost any spot. The handle swings horizontally with the brush head, making it easy to clean under furniture. I also appreciate that you can lock the mop in an upright position. It makes it much easier when you have to stop mid-task to take care of something (as opposed to having to prop the handle and hope it doesn't fall).

When you're done cleaning, there's no need to disassemble the mop rollers. Just run a self-cleaning cycle. I was concerned that there would be mildew growth (a problem I've encountered with powered mops that don't have drying bases), but those fears were unfounded. Whenever I needed the VacWashG1, it was ready to grab and use without delay.

Not having to vacuum beforehand means that the debris tray will fill up. You'll want to clean it out every time. The mopping module pulls out easily as well for occasional cleaning. Dyson recommends doing this every third use. I find that I need to do it at least every other run because I have a lot of pet and human hair floating around my home. What's nice is that the VacWashG1's screen walks you through the manual cleaning process whenever you start a self-cleaning cycle.

Is It Worth It?

At $699, it's in line with comparable products from Tineco and Roborock. And while other companies have more gimmicks, like heated drying or heated/ozonated water, I appreciate the fact that Dyson has focused on making the VacWashG1 a highly effective machine without adding on additional tech.

If you have hard floors, the VacWashG1 is an unfussy, impressive performer that will keep your floors spotless no matter what you throw at them. Learn more on the Dyson website.

After the chaotic Christmas dinner, I quickly switched to the Dyson VacWashG1 to tackle the nut shells and mud tracks left behind. Its ability to clean hard debris without requiring a pre-clean made the post-dinner cleanup a breeze.

Despite the festive mishaps, the Dyson VacWashG1 proved to be an invaluable ally, polishing my home back to its original shine before the New Year began.
