The individual responsible for the creation of the air conditioner is unknown, as its invention is often credited to multiple people. However, Willis Haviland Carrier is often cited as the primary developer, having patented the first modern air conditioning system in 1902.

In the late 1800s, the concept of air conditioning took its first steps towards becoming a reality. John Gorrie, an American doctor living in the hot and humid state of Florida, was one of the pioneers in this field. During a yellow fever epidemic in one of the hospitals he worked at, Gorrie tried to lower the room temperature and improve the air quality to combat the spread of disease.

It was believed at the time that diseases spread quickly through bad air or poisonous exhalations, a theory known as miasma. Gorrie, driven by this belief, experimented with artificial ice as a means to cool the rooms. Although his methods were rudimentary, hanging ice blocks from the ceiling to cool the room, they were cumbersome and expensive.

Despite these challenges, Gorrie's ideas were not forgotten. In 1901, Willis Haviland Carrier, a mechanical engineer, became a graduate and soon after, he would make air conditioning suitable for the mass market. Carrier's first air conditioning for the mass market, published in 1907, was a significant milestone in the history of air conditioning.

The Carrier Air Conditioning Company, founded by Willis Haviland Carrier in Brooklyn, expanded rapidly into the Asian market and achieved significant commercial success. Today, the Asian market is the world's largest market for air conditioners. The company's products are distributed worldwide, including the first automobile air conditioning system, which Carrier invented in 1939, and was developed by the Packard company.

John Gorrie, despite inventing the first functional ice-making machine in 1851, experienced financial ruin due to his experiments. He died alone and impoverished in 1855. However, his pioneering work laid the foundation for the modern air conditioning industry, which is still dominated by the Carrier Air Conditioning Company, one of the world's largest air conditioning manufacturers.

In the decades that followed, air conditioning has become an essential part of our lives, improving our comfort, health, and productivity. From cooling our homes and offices to powering the air conditioning systems in our cars, the legacy of John Gorrie and Willis Haviland Carrier continues to shape our world.
