Kickin' it Small and '80s Style: Gallery 1988's Shrunken Art Show

Art shows are all about having a vibe, maybe it's an artist's solo gig or a collection centered on a specific theme. Sometimes, the theme is as wide as the cosmos, while others keep it petite and quirky.

Friday's going to be a blast, folks! Gallery 1988 is unveiling a fresh online exhibit, "Honey, I Shrunk the Art Show," tinkered with by the artistic power duo, Tom Whalen and Dave Perillo, known for their miniature pop-culture portraits. io9 fans have seen their magic at Gallery 1988 before, and now, these LA favorites are back with something bigger, yet compact.

What's the secret ingredient? A little friendly competition! The Philadelphia buddies were approached by Gallery 1988 to create a new show, and with many collaborative projects under their belt, they thought, "why not make it a party?" So, they extended invites to their talented friends to join in, and the rest is history.

"Gallery 1988 dropped us a line, asking us to whip up a new show for them," shared Whalen. "Dave and I pondered, and eventually landed on an '80s-themed show with a fun twist—all pieces need to be 6 x 6 inches or less. Everyone we contacted jumped on board, and the outcomes are rockin'!"

Check out the sneak peeks below. You'll spot pieces not just from Perillo and Whalen, but other io9 faves like Eric Tan and Cuddly Rigor Mortis. So, what's Whalen's take on those spine-tingling horror-based trading cards?

"I've been yearning to create trading cards for some time," he revealed. "I stumbled upon a vendor that produces top-notch, low-run trading cards, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to launch my line of compact art pieces. If people dig 'em, I'd love to continue the series with loads more movie icons."

Swing by the Gallery 1988 website at around 2 p.m. ET on Friday, July 19, to check out the full exhibit.
