U.S. Space Force Urges Private Sector Collaboration for Enhanced Space Domain Awareness

The U.S. Space Force is pushing for enhanced space domain awareness, with Gen. Saltzman urging deeper collaboration with the private sector. The military's current tracking systems are struggling to keep up with the growing complexity of the space environment and increasing threats.

Gen. Saltzman, chief of space operations, has called for faster detection and characterization of on-orbit activities. He acknowledged past hesitance in accelerating commercial partnerships but emphasized the need for 'decision quality understanding' in space surveillance.

The Space Force maintains a space catalog but faces challenges in handling the growing number of satellites, space debris, and anti-satellite weapons. Companies like L3Harris, Omitron, and Parsons Corporation are actively cooperating with the US Space Force to develop and deploy new technologies. The operationally accepted ATLAS system, designed to replace outdated infrastructure, is one such initiative for faster and more efficient space surveillance.

The military's space surveillance systems are being modernized. The Maui Space Surveillance Complex is undergoing upgrades, including improvements to the GEODSS system and the establishment of SDA TAP Labs. These upgrades aim to keep pace with the increasing number of satellites and potential threats.

The Space Force's push for enhanced space domain awareness comes as the Pentagon prepares for potential conflicts where space assets could be primary targets. Modern military operations heavily rely on space-based assets, making them critical targets. The Space Force published a commercial space strategy in April 2024 to guide expanded industry partnerships, aiming to accelerate the adoption of commercial technologies for space domain awareness.
