Uber and May Mobility jointly pursue growth in the driverless, on-demand transportation sector within Arlington
Spice Up Your Rides in Arlington with Uber's Self-Driving Game-Changer
Kick back and relax because autonomy is coming to Arlington rideshare! Uber and the AV pioneers at May Mobility are teaming up to revolutionize your commute!
The big move is expected by the end of this year, giving Uber passengers in Arlington the chance to hop aboard an autonomous vehicle (AV) instead of a regular taxi. Don't worry, there'll be a safety operator hanging around for the initial trips, but rest assured, this isn't a wild, adrenaline-pumping ride!
"We believe we'll bring great service to riders and then also safe service to riders," says Daisy Wall, May Mobility's senior director of business, hopeful that passengers will appreciate the sobriety of the ride. "It'll be an experience for anyone who comes to Arlington, and we hope that when they get into an autonomous vehicle, they'll be like, 'Hey, you know, this is kind of boring actually."
The AV fleet will be Toyota Sienna Autono-MaaS vehicles, packed with May Mobility's state-of-the-art Multi-Policy Decision Making (MPDM) technology, which enables human-like AI reasoning to navigates complex urban spaces.
May Mobility isn't new to Arlington. They've been rolling around town since 2022 with a limited service area focused on downtown and UT Arlington. Currently, they offer over 1,000 rides per week in Arlington, with more than 100,000 rides since they first hit the streets.
With this ambitious new partnership, Uber and May Mobility aim to reach beyond the existing service area, offering rapid deployment and scaled-up operations. Uber appeared unavailable for an interview, but May Mobility says they're eager to expand already-existing services in Arlington, impressed by their beneficial experience with the RAPID (Rideshare, Automation, and Payment Integration Demonstration) program.
Ann Foss, Arlington's transportation department manager, is excited about the decision to bring this AV program to Arlington. Arlington was at the forefront of autonomous vehicles with the first introduction back in 2017, and Foss is eager to continue leading the charge in AI-powered transportation.
Interestingly, as Arlington's RAPID program nears its endpoint, the Uber-May Mobility partnership will not receive public funding. Instead, the May Mobility vehicles operating in the downtown and UT Arlington area will operate independently.
Arlington already offers Via, a subsidized rideshare service, functioning as the city’s public transit system. The service aims to meet riders within two blocks and drop them off within the same distance, with rates between $3-$5 dollars. As part of the city's efforts to close next year's budget deficit, riders might soon see some increase in prices.
