Ukraine's Drones Destroy Four North Korean Koksan Artillery Systems
Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces have scored a significant victory, destroying four North Korean-made M1989 Koksan self-propelled artillery systems used by Russian forces. The rare and formidable platforms, weighing 40 tons each and armed with a 170mm gun capable of firing up to 60 kilometers, were rendered inoperable by precision drone strikes.
The mission was carried out by the 412th Nemesis Regiment using bomber and FPV drones. The strikes damaged the barrels and breech blocks of the artillery systems, making them unusable. This is not the first time Ukrainian forces have targeted the Koksan. Earlier, a North Korean-made Koksan was destroyed in a precision strike using HIMARS in eastern Ukraine. Russia reportedly transferred a newly formed artillery brigade equipped with Koksan systems to Ukraine in May, hoping to gain an edge in artillery warfare. However, military analysts suggest that Russia may be equipping more of its artillery brigades with North Korean hardware, indicating a potential shift in their artillery strategy.
The destruction of the Koksan systems is a symbolic victory for Ukraine, demonstrating the effectiveness of its drone capabilities. The Koksan's range surpasses any conventional tube artillery currently in Russia's arsenal, making its loss a significant blow to Russia's artillery capabilities. As Russia continues to seek military advantages, Ukraine's ability to disrupt and destroy these systems highlights the importance of its unmanned systems forces in the ongoing conflict.
