Utilization: BIM software employed in almost about twenty percent of construction projects
The German construction industry is overlooking significant advantages such as increased efficiency, cost savings, error prevention, and achieving sustainability goals, according to a recent study commissioned by the digital association Bitkom. Currently, only approximately 18% of construction and renovation companies in Germany are using Building Information Modeling (BIM), a technology that creates a digital model of a building. However, leading companies such as Nemetschek Group, Autodesk Inc., Bentley Systems Inc., Dassault Systemes SA, Beck Technology Ltd., Aveva Group Plc., Hexagon AB, Pentagon Solution Ltd., Trimble Ltd., and Planon Group are investing heavily in BIM software and promoting digitalization in construction. BuildingSMART Germany, a professional network driving BIM adoption, also plays a key role, with more than 750 member organizations across the construction and real estate sectors. Despite the advantages, nearly two-thirds of companies have not dealt with BIM sufficiently or at all (63%). Nastassja Hofmann, an expert for crafts and construction at Bitkom, stated that the German construction industry must catch up in the use of BIM. The focus for BIM adoption should be on both new and existing buildings. Indeed, in the long run, the key lies in making digital twins the standard for existing buildings as well. Among companies that currently use BIM, 13% plan to continue using it in the future. However, concerns about the risk of excessive surveillance in the construction industry as a consequence of BIM are prevalent, with 45% of construction and renovation companies fearing this risk. Interestingly, very few companies have consciously decided against using BIM software (2%). The opportunities of BIM outweigh the concerns for many companies, as BIM software consolidates information from various project teams and provides reliable insights into materials used for a century. Over half of the companies recognize the potential of BIM for the construction industry (56%). Construction companies must develop clear strategies for introducing BIM in new construction to fully harness its benefits. As the industry continues to evolve, it is crucial for companies to embrace BIM to stay competitive and sustainable in the long run.
