Utilization of Generative AI Tools on Our Website: An Overview

AI-driven tools are shaking up the content creation landscape. From articles to images and videos, these tools can whip up content in a flash, with impressive accuracy. Chatbots like ChatGPT can churn out lengthy articles at lightning speed, while AI-generated image creators can produce snazzy illustrations in nanoseconds. But here's the twist - it ain't all sunshine and rainbows.

These AI wonders can fall flat when it comes to sourcing, triage, or making judgement calls. They can fabricate tidbits of truth like a magician pulling rabbits from a hat, have been caught nicking passages verbatim, and occasionally produce lifeless content that lacks umph.

On the flip side, these AI whizzes can generate, summarize, and format content quicker than a speeding bullet. They can crank out detailed pieces on complex subjects lightening fast, perfect for explanatory content. But the magic comes with a caveat - the AI's output should be viewed as an early draft from an eager intern. It'll require careful oversight, fact-checking, and editing to give it that human touch.

For our website, we'll be dipping our toes into the AI pool. We'll use AI-generated text in some articles, provided it meets certain rules. It'll go through plagiarism-detecting software, checked that its sources are reliable, fact-checked, edited to add that human touch, and disclosed for all to see. We'll make sure it's paired with citations, so everyone knows where the info came from.

As for images, we'll keep it racy only if the AI tool's been trained on images it's licensed to use, in the public domain, or both (looking at you, Adobe Firefly). If we're unsure of the source, forget about it. If the point is to chat about generative images in a scholarly manner, we might make exceptions, but it'll be on a case-by-case basis.

For audio, AI can lend its voice to read our copy, effectively turning articles into podcasts. We haven't jumped on the bandwagon yet, but we're keeping an eye on it. If we decide to cash in, we'll make sure to disclose it in the show notes.

AI can also help us get our social media copy firing on all cylinders, as long as it gets a good cleanup and fact-check before hitting the streets. No AI-generated images in our social media posts, though. That's a hard no.

For headlines and short descriptions, AI can provide suave suggestions. We'll treat them as suggestions, though, never losing sight that the humans in our team will always double-check the accuracy and style.

AI can lend a hand with research too, like sifting through long documents like court filings, research papers, or press releases. As long as we don't lift any of the AIs generated text and give credit where it's due, it's all gravy. Just remember to be wary of facts and always dig a little deeper.

When it comes to AI-generated story ideas, they're fair game. Just make sure to vet them and research them before we run off with them. If the actual text generated by the AI doesn't end up in the final article, we don't get all high and mighty about disclosing its initial AI suggestion. But it's always kind of cool to give credit where it's due, right?

We're stepping into the future with AI, but we're not out here breakdancing solo. We're teaming up with other publishers to figure out best practices, ensuring AI serves journalism rather than the other way around. We're all about transparency, accountability, and innovation with consent. With these three little words - disclosure, editing, and verification - we can tread carefully into this brave new AI-driven world, making sure our content remains accurate, original, and respectful to the original content creators.

UPDATE (Apr. 2, 2025, 18:53 UTC): Changed the citation policy for generative text in articles to clarify that citations should appear either within the article itself or in a clearly labeled reference section at the bottom of the page.

UPDATE (Aug. 1, 2023, 20:48 UTC): Allowed for AI-created images where the AI has been trained on licensed or public domain data.

The integration of AI technology in content creation extends to the realm of NFTs and web3, as AI-generated artworks can be curated and displayed on these platforms. However, such artworks should still be fact-checked, edited, and verified to ensure their accuracy and originality, just as with traditional content.

In the realm of artificial intelligence, the merger of AI and artificial intelligence is not unimaginable. As AI continues to evolve, it could potentially generate innovative ideas and algorithms for improving AI systems, thereby revolutionizing the technological landscape.
