VPN service provider ExpressVPN incorporates WireGuard protocol and enhances security with post-quantum measures.

Starting from August 6, 2025, ExpressVPN has made a significant stride in securing online privacy by introducing a quantum-resistant version of the WireGuard VPN protocol on its iOS, Android, Windows, and soon-to-be-released macOS apps.

Advancing Quantum-Resistant VPN Technology

The adoption of the post-quantum encryption standard ML-KEM, a hybrid key encapsulation mechanism issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), marks a strategic action to safeguard online privacy ahead of the quantum computing era. This move is expected to protect against both current and emerging threats from quantum computers.

Enhanced Privacy Features

ExpressVPN’s WireGuard implementation offers several privacy-enhancing features. Every session begins with a quantum-resistant key exchange using ML-KEM, moving beyond conventional protocols that lack this protection. The implementation also includes ephemeral (short-lived) credentials, dynamic internal IPs, and short-lived access tokens to reduce user tracking and correlation over time.

Improved Security and Scalability

WireGuard, in its standard form, lacks native user authentication and key rotation. ExpressVPN’s version addresses this by adding lightweight authentication tokens and dynamic connection provisioning, improving security and scalability without modifying the core protocol.

Runs on TrustedServer Infrastructure

The WireGuard implementation operates within ExpressVPN’s RAM-only TrustedServer environment, ensuring that no data is stored permanently on disk, thereby minimizing data retention and risk from server compromise.

Encouraging Industry Standards

By publishing a detailed white paper and sharing their architectural blueprint, ExpressVPN encourages other VPN providers to adopt similar quantum-secure enhancements, potentially raising industry standards for quantum-era secure VPNs.

Transition and Compatibility

ExpressVPN, having relied on its proprietary Lightway protocol with post-quantum security, adds WireGuard—known for speed and efficiency—enriched with quantum security, as a major step in industry transition towards quantum-resistant VPN technology without sacrificing performance or privacy.

A Catalyst for the VPN Industry

ExpressVPN’s move towards quantum-secure VPN technology is significant both for its users today and as a catalyst for the wider VPN industry to adopt post-quantum security standards. Any VPN provider, big or small, providing it runs its own servers, can now introduce PQE protections.

In addition to this quantum-secure enhancement, ExpressVPN has also introduced HTTPS proxy support as an added privacy option, thanks to a new "strategic partnership" with Bitripple which integrates LT3 acceleration into Lightway, providing improved data transmission for slower internet connections. ExpressVPN hasn't stopped at showing the rest of the VPN industry what to do next, introducing themes and full Dark Mode on its mobile apps.
