Uncovering Your WhatsApp Messaging Habits

by Malte Mansholt

Caught within the whirlwind of daily communication, it's hard to fathom the sheer volume of messages we send via WhatsApp. According to Meta, the parent company, a staggering 100 billion messages are sent daily. Amidst families, friends, and classroom groups, WhatsApp is a staple in German daily life. Yet, many would be surprised by their actual message count.

The opportunity to analyze one's chatting habits is hidden within the various WhatsApp settings. Here's how to uncover this information.

Discovering Chat Stats on iPhone and Android

On the iPhone app, tap the gear icon at the bottom right to open the settings. Opt for "Storage & Data," found next to a green logo comprising two arrows, then select "Network Usage." Android users should follow similar steps by tapping the three-dot menu at the top right, then choosing "Storage & Data" and "Network Usage."

In both instances, you'll find information about the data sent through the network and the exact number of messages exchanged on WhatsApp. However, this number may not always be fully accurate, as missing messages may appear if you've switched devices without restoring a backup or used a different operating system. Nevertheless, for most users, the figure should provide a humbling revelation.

In earlier versions of the app, you could view the number of messages shared with specific contacts or groups. Regrettably, this feature seems to have been discontinued.

If you wish to clean up your storage, it can be accomplished through the same menu, simply by choosing "Data Usage" instead of "Network Data." The photos and videos consuming the most space will be listed at the top, followed by your most shared photos and videos, and then sorted chats based on media sent. Clearing these out can swiftly free up several gigabytes of space.

In sum, WhatsApp offers users a simple method to monitor their messaging activity without the need for third-party apps. Understanding and tracking the number of messages you send and receive provides insights into your digital communication habits.

  1. The WhatsApp data usage on iPhone can be found by tapping the gear icon, selecting "Storage & Data," and then choosing "Network Usage," which displays the data sent through the network, including the exact number of messages exchanged on WhatsApp.
  2. Apart from monitoring messaging activity, WhatsApp also allows iPhone and Android users to clear their stored photos, videos, and data within the same menu, freeing up valuable storage space on their devices.
