Wrightbus reveals groundbreaking zero-emission bus in momentous global manufacturing breakthrough
Wrightbus, a leading name in the transportation industry, has marked a pivotal moment in the UK's green transport revolution with the unveiling of its 6×2 zero-emission StreetDeck bus. This announcement comes after a record-breaking 12 months for the company, during which they launched a new electric midi-bus range, a next-generation hydrogen coach, a diesel coach, and a hydrogen-powered double-decker.
The new StreetDeck Ultroliner bus will be powered by a Cummins B6.7 litre six-cylinder diesel engine, married with the latest Voith DIWA.8 NXT 7-speed transmission. This model is expected to meet strong demand in international markets, including Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.
In a significant development, Wrightbus has secured a new order from German-based bus operator West Verkehr for its single-deck zero-emission hydrogen bus, the Kite Hydroliner. West Verkehr has ordered a fleet of 12 Kite Hydroliners, with the vehicles set to be rolled out across the town of Geilenkirchen.
The 6×2 StreetDeck bus was simultaneously produced at Wrightbus's manufacturing facilities in Ballymena, Northern Ireland and in Malaysia. The new fleet of zero-emission vehicles, manufactured by Wrightbus, has been launched in York. Operated by First Bus, the fleet consists of 53 StreetDeck Electroliner double-decks and single-deck GB Kite Electroliner buses. Each battery-electric bus in the York fleet will save up to 100 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Wrightbus's expansion includes bolstering staffing in both Ballymena and Malaysia, opening a new facility for its repowering arm, NewPower, in Bicester, and launching a European service centre in Brühl, Germany. The company has secured a £150 million finance package from HSBC UK, positioning Wrightbus to ramp up production and meet soaring global demand.
Jean-Marc Gales, the Chief Executive Officer of Wrightbus, officially presented the 6×2 zero-emission bus model. Wrightbus stands at the vanguard of the UK's drive toward net zero, delivering sustainable innovation, creating jobs, and showcasing British engineering on a global stage. The company is now the world's fastest-growing zero-emission bus manufacturer, with international orders secured for the Far East and Europe.
The new StreetDeck Ultroliner bus will undergo rigorous efficiency and durability testing over the summer, with the first demonstrator unit set to be deployed in Hong Kong for 12 months. The 6×2 StreetDeck bus will undergo similar testing, with the first demonstrator unit set to be deployed in Hong Kong for 12 months.
Wrightbus, since being rescued from administration in 2019, now employs over 2,300 people, with 95% of its 1,200 annual bus output being zero-emission vehicles. The company's commitment to sustainable transport solutions continues to drive its growth and success in the global market.
