YouTube TV in Talks to Renew Content Deals, Averts NBCUniversal Disruption
YouTube TV, the streaming service with over 10 million subscribers, is currently in negotiations to renew agreements with major content providers. Talks are underway with Disney and ESPN, while a short-term extension has been reached with NBCUniversal to prevent service disruptions. The extension follows a contentious negotiation between YouTube TV and NBCUniversal, which ended with a brief service interruption for some viewers.
YouTube TV, the fourth-largest operator in the U.S., has been in discussions with Disney and ESPN to renew an agreement set to expire soon. Meanwhile, a potential disruption was averted when the service reached a short-term extension with NBCUniversal. The current agreement with NBCUniversal was due to expire at midnight ET on Tuesday, but a last-minute deal kept its channels available.
The negotiations with NBCUniversal have been complex, with one key issue being YouTube TV's desire to 'ingest' streaming programming from NBCUniversal. This push has been a point of contention between the two parties. Despite the ongoing negotiations, YouTube TV has not hesitated to raise prices, increasing them twice in less than two years, with a total uptick of $18.
YouTube TV continues to grow, surpassing 10 million subscribers since its launch eight years ago. As it expands, the service is working to secure content deals with major providers like Disney, ESPN, and NBCUniversal. The recent extension with NBCUniversal ensures continued service for its subscribers while negotiations for a new carriage deal continue. The talks are being led by representatives from NBCUniversal's labor relations and YouTube TV's management teams.
